Death Stranding showed up during Sony’s E3 presentation. Here it is:

From legendary game creator Hideo Kojima comes an all new, genre defining experience for the PlayStation®4. Besieged by death's tide at every turn, Sam Bridges must brave a world utterly transformed by the Death Stranding. Carrying the stranded remnants of the future in his hands, Sam embarks on a journey to reunite the shattered world one step at a time. What is the mystery of the Death Stranding? What will Sam discover on the road ahead? A genre defining gameplay experience holds these answers and more.

I’ll level with you, readers: I did not watch this trailer. I clicked the button so I could embed it but that was it. But as an experiment, I glanced at the first page of comments on Youtube to see if that would make any more sense than the trailers that came before it. The first comment, the one upvoted most at time of writing, is an in-depth look of the contents of the trailer, talking about Chiral allergies, “having dooms” that will cause you to blow up if you’re absorbed into huge monster, the 'extinction factor', and explosive resurrection. The comments that followed includes: Skull references, "good music", something about Fetus lamps, and "Post apocalyptic Fedex Simulator with weird story elements."

So no. I’m gonna have to peg this as equally confusing as the trailers beforehand. But at least the video description is close to coherent.

Still, there was little gameplay and still no release date, but it was worshiped regardless by Hideo Kojima’s perpetually starved fanbase. Welcome to E3, everyone.
