COVID Central: GDC is Set for August 4th, For Some Reason

That's a nice dream, isn't it?

GDC was postponed a while back, as you know, because a disease you’re probably sick to death of hearing about, COVID-19, decided to happen instead, and it wasn’t exactly willing to share the spotlight. It was supposed to happen this week, and while we have a swell Games Showcase on Steam that allows us to see some of what was going to be showcased this year, the face-to-face conferences and the high-level talks have all been postponed.

And while before we didn’t know the target date for the grand return of GDC, it was just announced last night. And it’s a little… let’s call it “ambitious”. Because they’re gunning to host it again in August 4, calling it “Summer GDC.”

From a press release:

"Safety remains the GDC organizers’ paramount concern and the GDC team will continue to monitor the latest information from health officials to ensure a safe and compelling event for everyone at GDC Summer.”

I would love it if we could contain the pandemic by then, but given how fast it’s spreading and the consistent failures of the US government to react appropriately, I seriously doubt it will be. And since everyone will be pinching pennies in the following months… who’d be willing to even make the trip?

But who knows. Maybe they know something I don’t. I really hope they do.
