EVE Online is more than just a place where hundreds of thousands of players invest hundreds of thousands of dollars for the sake of a digital turf war: it’s also one of the most invested and charitable communities in the entire games industry. This is no small part thanks to the efforts of the developer, CCP, and their long-running charitable event PLEX for good, where people can donate in-game money for real-world charities.

Through PLEX for good, they’ve raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for natural disasters like the 2015 Nepal Earthquake, Hurricane Irene, and even the Australian bushfires that rampaged down under… earlier in 2020. Christ, what a year.

Anyway, as you might expect, they’re kick starting PLEX for good again, this time, to tackle the worldwide pandemic known as COVID-19: the first time the CCP’s donated to a natural disaster of this kind.

From their blog:

It is time to unite once more and help fight this unprecedented worldwide health challenge. The money raised through this PLEX For GOOD campaign will help the World Health Organization (WHO) to coordinate the global effort, support countries to prevent, detect, and respond to the pandemic. It will also help the WHO to ensure that all countries - especially those with the weakest health systems - are prepared, as well as supporting their work to understand the virus, to ensure frontline workers get essential supplies and information, and to accelerate efforts to develop vaccines, tests, and treatments.

On top of opening up for donations, they’re also designing new in-game items for people to wear to show their solidarity, they also revealed that like many game studios around the world, the CCP has switched to a completely work-from-home structure, so their own employees can do their part in keeping the world just that little bit safer.

All the same, great news. Here’s hoping it goes off without a hitch.
