But one developer, Coffee Stain Studios, the creators of Satisfactory and Goat Simulator, say that all this irritation is severely misplaced.
In an interview with. PCGamesn, UX and UI designer Nathalie Verwei had this to say:
“I think as an indie studio it’s nice to have that security that you know that your game is going to get out there and you don’t need to worry about making certain financial deadlines. You can just focus on making a good game. Of course, we had some backlash but I think it’s a loud minority… I think it’s a good thing that Epic is trying to do. Of course, the users will only see the end of, ‘oh, it’s another launcher, it’s another store’ but Epic is trying to do something for game developers to make it better for them so we can deliver better quality of products, basically.”
This isn’t exactly a new opinion: the idea of trading security for exclusivity rights has been a line repeated by just about every indie developer who tried to justify taking ‘the deal’, and generally it’s been accepted – with the massive and noteworthy exception of the people behind Ooblets, who did such a bad job presenting their case that they wound up inviting only more harassment into their lives.
Kind of soured the whole thing.
In any case, I doubt this will change anyone’s mind on the subject, but it’s still good to keep an ear to the ground on these matters.
