Club Nintendo Shutting Down for Some Reason

Spend those coins like they're going out of style... because they are.

Have you heard of Club Nintendo?

It was actually a pretty good deal for dedicated Nintendo fans—you signed up, registered your system, and every time you made a Nintendo purchase or gave feedback, you would get coins you could redeem for awesome, often exclusive, swag. For example, the Super Mario Galaxy OST was an exclusive reward for Club Nintendo members, to the frustration of everyone who just wanted to buy it over iTunes like normal human beings.

It was neat, but don’t pull out your credit cards just yet there, partners. Because Nintendo announced today that the Club Nintendo program would unwind and eventually close. Currently, any new product released by Nintnedo is worth no coins. March 31st is the last day new people can register for the program—while June 30th is the day all the coins will vanishes and the program will suddenly shut down.

Nintendo promised to add new games and limited reward items for people to spend their coins on before the program closes, because the coins you lose at June 30th won’t be coming back. While Nintendo has said a new rewards program will be coming in the future, the coins will NOT be transferable and no rewards will be carried over.

Club Nintendo was founded in 2007, a combination of their VIP 24:7 and Club Member programs, and was fairly successful. I’m not sure why Nintendo is canceling it, but if you have any coins, spend them on something before June 30th, or you’ll miss your chance.
