Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will have Extra-Hard Single-Player Modes

One of them is called "YOLO". Seriously.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare doesn't have much going for it: a problem that has been exacerbated by the fact that Battlefield 1 has come out and it's actually quite good, living up to the hype that had been built around CoD's most acclaimed competitor. The game launches tomorrow, so we'll get a chance to see if one of the most passionately disliked games in recent years can redeem itself despite itself, but in the meantime, it's Activision's job to try to entice someone, anyone, to actually buy the game to give them that chance. To that end, they've announced two new single-player difficulties in an attempt to court the hardcore, challenge seeking player:

These two difficulties are called "Specialist" and, yes, "YOLO." Already, this bodes badly.

Specialist, which is unlocked after beating the game at any difficulty, comes with a series of gameplay changes that will challenge even the most hardened CoD player, and I have to admit, it actually looks rather interesting:
  • You can only heal with Nano Shots, there is no health regeneration in this mode.
  • Helmets are your only protection from headshots. They will take permanent damage and will need to be replaced.
  • Both Nano Shots and helmets take up equipment slots, so remember to equip them in your loadout on the Retribution before each level.
  • If you get shot in the legs, it will impact your movement. If you get shot in either arm, it will impact your ability to use equipment or aim down sights. Note: Your weapon can be shot out of your hands.
The still terribly-named YOLO mode, then, is unlocked when you beat the game on Specialist and works exactly as implied: you have exactly one shot, one opportunity, to beat the campaign, and if you fail, you have to start all the way over from the beginning.

It sounds cool, don't get me wrong, and the whole "body injury affects your performance" thing is a neat trick, but to even try YOLO mode you have to beat the main campaign two other times. Either that campaign better be really good, or short enough where it won't be seen as a slog.

Or I guess you could just play "specialist" and just willingly erase your data when you lose.

That could work.
