Battlefield 1's First Expansion Is Now Free

That's some good savings right there.

Battlefield 1 is on its last legs as EA gears up to release a new game in the series, probably one that will ditch the World War 1 setting (although that was inspired while it lasted, right?) to move on to another war: probably World War 2, but hopefully we’ll get a side of WW2 we don’t get to see often, like the African campaigns or the pacific theater. But as Battlefield 1 winds down, EA has decided to start being a bit more generous with it, and with the upcoming 40 v 40 Shock Operations mode coming out, it’s decided to also give away one of the old expansions for free.

Specifically, the first expansion, “They Shall Not Pass”, is now available to all Battlefield 1 players at no cost. That expansion included four new maps – one of which, Rupture, was already made free by EA some time ago – the French army (who’s absence was felt painfully in the base game), and an elite unit called the Trench Raider that uses grenades and spike-covered clubs to clear… well… trenches. As the name would suggest.

While I doubt many people are happy that Battlefield 1 is starting to decline – it didn’t really get much chance to ‘bask’ in its completed form – it is always fun to see what kind of stuff EA will be generous with as they enter those final weeks and months. I doubt EA will be releasing the other expansions for free anytime soon, although there is precedent for it, so who knows? Maybe in four years people can get Battlefield 1 for 20 bucks with all expansions included and have a gay old time. Stranger things have happened.

Regardless, take advantage of that if you really want, but in the meantime, we’ll keep an anxious eye on how that Battle Royale mess is going to work in Battlefield… whatever they call it.
