Alganon Disappears from Steam Store, Considered Dead

Technically it's been dead since November.

There's a good chance that you haven't heard about Alganon, the MMORPG developed by Quest Online. Even if you have, there's a chance that your opinions of it are a bit less than positive. Not that it matters much now, considering the game has unofficially been shut down.

Alganon originally launched in December 2009, where it received heavy criticism for imitating World of Warcraft too strikingly. The game was also riddled with bugs and other technical issues. This led to the game relaunching with new leadership in 2010. The new leadership was no other than Derek Smart, a controversal game designer. He had a history of creating games with little post-launch life and is currently best known for his claims that Star Citizen would never be a successful game.

To stir things up even more, fans had noticed that the re-launch press tour contained a number of press releases that were almost identical to press releases made by other companies and games, such as Bioware's Star Wars: The Old Republic

The Alganon servers have been offline since mid-November of last year. While Derek Smart claimed several weeks after the shutdown that it would only be temporary, no solid information on that has been provided.

As of now, Alganon is no longer accessible from the Steam Marketplace. This is the unofficial mark that the game is essentially dead for good and that it won't be coming back.

Alganon was ambitious but poorly managed. My sympathies go out to those who did play and enjoy the game, what few there were.
