Crowdfunding has started to become more and more of a regular thing in the video game industry. Kickstarter is the main platform for which developers go to get their projects noticed and we've gotten some great games out of it. It can be hard for small developers to get sufficient funding for their projects and Kickstarter allows the gaming community to choose which games they want to see developed.

While Kickstarter can be an amazing service to provide us games that otherwise would have never been possible, it's also prone to problems. Many titles get funded to then be eventually abandoned and never released. It's important to really look into the project you're helping out and make sure your money is in the right hands. Many games take years to develop, even after being funded on Kickstarter, so it's especially hard to keep patient with the development of a game that you have an investment in.

Since launching in 2009, Kickstarter has been getting increasingly more popular as more developers are successfully funding games with its help. Kickstarter has hit somewhat of a milestone, hitting over 10,000 funded games projects. While not all of these are video games, it's still a very impressive number for this crowdfunding site.

The biggest crowdfunded game of all time was Shenmue III, bringing in $6.33 million from over 69,000 backers. The top 5 video game projects in history have brought in over $25 million combined over Kickstarter. To celebrate this achievement, Kickstarter has posted some mind-blowing statistics over on their blog. Congratulations Kickstarter.
