Nintendo NX to have Mobile Features?

Rumors have long been swirling around Nintendo’s extremely mysterious next entry into the console race, codenamed “Nintendo NX”, and that’s not looking to change anytime soon. While Nintendo has recently promised it would reveal more about this enigmatic machine sometime this year, so far all we’ve learnt concretely is that one of the first games to be made for it would be a Dragon Quest game and that Nintendo describes it as a hybrid console.

Well, since Nintendo has been in no hurry to pull the curtain back, leaks and rumors are all we have—and recently, a new rumor has started to circulate around this console… one that may have been leaked by one of Nintendo’s Suppliers.

First reported by Daily Star UK, a local publication in Taiwan apparently said that in a recent quarterly results meeting for Macronix International, it was stated that the upcoming Nintendo NX may have handheld gaming features. As for what those handheld gaming features would be, or how they would manifest in the NX, went unsaid—and even the phrasing of what was said was vague enough that it could be misinterpreted fairly easily. But given that Macronix is the supplier who largely works with the memory cards Nintendo uses in the DS and the 3DS, it’s possible these ‘handheld gaming features’ might be some kind of interplay between mobile systems or a game data transfer.

Additionally, with Nintendo’s recent adventures into mobile phone gaming, its long history dominating the field of portable consoles, and the fact they have already called it a hybrid platform, this kind of rumor is perfectly believable. It might even be a good thing for the consumer, considering the 3DS is by far Nintendo’s most popular system right now, and linking it with the NX might be a great way to draw more gamers.

That said, it’s still merely a rumor pulled from an untrustworthy source—so we’ll have to wait to discover if there’s any merits to these claims.
