Halo Reach Leaked Online

Well, this is indeed some interesting news. You might have heard that Microsoft recently made Halo Reach available to game reviewers on Xbox Live. The new Halo title isn't due out until September 14, but Microsoft decided to offer reviewers the chance to download and play the game for the crazy low price of 99,999 points, or $1,250.

Since we're not made of money, we decided to pass on such a great offer, especially in the light of the fact that the game is coming out in less than 3 weeks. Not long after the special download only version of the game was launched within a hidden portion of the online marketplace, the gaming site/forum GameTuts managed to hack in and nab their copy. Horrayy, victory! Or not? Here's what they had to say...

"So after a lot of .xex cracking etc., [m]e and my team finally did it, we got Halo: Reach!" moderator Joakim said, according to PC World, adding that they had no plans to release it to the public.

Another GameTuts team member backed Joakim's comments and said the team had agreed not to leak or distribute the game to another site... "The words among the team came to agreement that Halo: Reach will not be leaked, given, or distributed to any site," moderator Toxic wrote.

Like we really believe this? Well, it turns out some other members weren't so keen on the idea of not sharing and well, decided to share it anyway! Microsoft says they're unsure as to what punishment they'll enforce upon those who have the stolen copies.

Homefront Details Exclusive Features for the PC

The upcoming game title Homefront that we discussed in a recent article which depicts a story in which Korea invades the United States recently released new information on the game and how the PC version of the game will have exclusive features for the PC.

Frank De Lise, executive producer at Digital Extremes, has promised exclusive enhancements for the PC version, "PC players will be able to set up and host Homefront dedicated servers and enjoy additional community features including clan support. We believe the core PC first-person-shooter fan will really appreciate these features, which are becoming increasingly rare."

This is exciting news considering more and more games are getting away from hosting game servers and LAN support. Maybe this will start a trend?

New Battletar Galactica Online Details

It appears that the upcoming Battlestar Galactica Online will focus heavily on season 2 of the series and it could welcome in some of fans favorite actors.

The characters that will be portrayed in the online game include William Adama (originally played by Edward James Olmos), Kara Thrace (Katee Sackhoff), Lee Adama (Jamie Bamber), Number Six (Tricia Helfer), Number Eight/Boomer (Grace Park), Number One/Brother Cavil (Dean Stockwell), Chief Tyrol (Aaron Douglas) and Number Two/Leoben Conoy (Callum Keith Rennie).

The announcement did not say whether the actors themselves would come back to voice the characters. However, the head of Bigpoint seems to suggest it might happen.

QUOTE
These characters brought to life the story and captured the imaginations of a whole new generation of Battlestar Galactica fans, and we felt strongly that they needed to appear in the game," said Heiko Hubertz, chief executive officer and founder of Bigpoint, in a release. "Our goal is to create a deep connection to the mythology of [the] Syfy series, and by working with the producers, writers and actors, Bigpoint hopes to meet the expectations of the fans and allow them to wrote their own adventures through gameplay.

The Battlestar Galactica MMO will be a browser-based game, with the key characters included to help create a deeper connection to the storyline, provide quests and accentuate the dramatic tension that the series is known for. Hubertz is expected to share more details about the game on August 17 when he delivers a keynote at Game Developers Conference Europe, beginning Monday in Cologne, Germany.

Net Neutrality and its Affect on Gamers

Is net neutrality good for gaming? That's the question GamePro asks in a recent article. They go over the benefits and disadvantages of Net Neutrality as it affects a gamer. For example, if it were to take effect then gamers could see more lag in certain games they might play due to their bandwidth being throttled. It all sounds too socialistic to me. Below is an excerpt from their article;

QUOTE
The FCC has been working since October of 2009 to establish "net neutrality" guidelines. In a nutshell, net neutrality means that all service providers must allow nondiscriminatory access to all lawful content and must consent to all reasonable requests regarding the disclosure of service management information to ensure that all customers receive equal broadband access.

These new guidelines follow four key freedoms established by the FCC in 2005:

1. Consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers.

2. Consumers are entitled to access the lawful Internet content of their choice.

3. Consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network.

4. Consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice (subject to the needs of law enforcement.)

Nowhere in any of this are video games mentioned -- but net neutrality does have an impact on online games. Leveling the Internet playing field might have serious consequences for online latency; but at the same time, demanding transparency from all ISPs protects developers from getting slapped with unfair fees.
