Gearbox Offically Stops Updating Battleborn

It's the end of an... era...?

Gearbox’s failed attempt to create some healthy capitalist competition for Overwatch, Battleborn, was never really in the best of spots even at the prime of its release. It’s not that it was ever an especially bad game, it was “fine” by all accounts, but it came out at literally the worst time and by the time they figured out the only way to stay alive was to go fully free-to-play, it was way too late. The hero shooter was now only known by its reputation as the highest-profile game to be felled by the Overwatch juggernaut, and had become a punchline.

So really, it’s not terribly surprising that Gearbox would decide it was time to pack up their failed little project.

As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update. Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on.

The fall update, which includes balance patches and a few Borderlands-themed outfits, will apparently be the last “planned” update for the game. I put emphasis on “planned”, as Gearbox did hint at the idea that perhaps there could be more in the future with that last sentence, if one pays attention to social media.

Also, I want to personally thank you for giving Battleborn a chance, and dipping down into a new universe with us. We make games for you. And many of you have shared with us how much Battleborn has meant to you personally.

If there’s any good news for the small fan base that surrounds the game yet, it’s that Gearbox has no plans to close any servers for the foreseeable future. So you’ll still get to play with old friends and enemies, and maybe even talking someone new into giving it a shot, now that it’s free and all.

But still, it’s one more game, lost to the void of the market. Thus, the communists win again.
