Dust 514 to Shut Down Later This Year

Dust 514 was always a bit too ambitious for its own good. The idea behind it was sound--get more action-oriented players involved in the sprawling world of Eve Online by putting boots on the ground (and helmets on the heads) of soldiers who could work with some of the game’s player-run corporations to secure planet's, resources, money, and acclaim--the two games working together to make the world a little bit bigger. But, that would require a level of technical engineering even beyond CCP’s command, especially since the game was locked onto the PS3--and communication between the PSN network and the PC was a bit… difficult.

Well, despite this, Dust 514 has managed to remain a stable, if unexciting multiplayer shooter with a fairly dedicated fanbase… the problem being, that fanbase is currently stuck in the past, as the PS3 is more than a little old at this point. Well, there’s only so long CCP is willing to support that kind of backwards technology, and the company has recently announced it’s going to shut the game down so it could focus on it’s follow-up, a game that can more closely deliver on the promise of Dust 514 (and PC exclusive), Project Legion.

The date of the shutdown will be May 30th.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that DUST 514 will be shutting down on May 30th, 2016… This is in many ways an evolution of Project Legion, the concept we announced at EVE Fanfest 2014, but without the limitations of technical debt and development paths we quickly discovered in that effort that could never serve as a future-proof technology base for a full production game.”

We’ll learn more about this upcoming ‘remake’, if you’d like, at Evefest 2016. In the meantime, say farewell to Dust 514: and no, that’s not dust in your eye… it’s a tear. Heartbreaking, I know.
