Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Promise An Extremely Inclusive Character Creator

They've stopped assuming your gender.

All great creatives have a few skeletons in their closet, but CD Projekt Red’s basically got a morgue in theirs. On top of their well-documented issues with treating workers like human beings (which they say they want to fix but who knows how sincere that is), they’ve got a really bad history when it comes to gender and race issues in their games – some of which could be blamed on the author, certainly – and misappropriating hashtags and memes on their social media. They might be forward thinking in RPGs, but they’re most decidedly not when it comes to culture, but it seems they’re taking steps to try to improve that with their most recent project, Cyberpunk 2077.

In talking about the character customization options with Gamasutra, quest director Mataeusz Tomaszkiewicz confirmed that you won’t just be stuck making man or female characters – you can pull a full Saints Row:

"One of the things we want to do in the final game (which we couldn't show in the demo yet, because as you mentioned it's a work in progress) is to give the players as many options of customization in the beginning of the game as we can," he said. "For example, we want to do this thing where, as you create your character, after you choose the body type, you can, for example, use physical traits as you build your face that could be assigned to a man or a woman."

But they’re actually taking the next step forward by saying that character depictions in the game would be changed depending how the player creates them. Presumably, this includes being able to set things like orientation and which pronouns will be used, but that was never stated outright.

If true, it would mean Cyberpunk 2077 would be incredibly forward-thinking. Which would be very appropriate, all things considered.
