The last big update to come out for Assassin’s Creed Origins was “Discovery” mode, which added a whole slew of extra content in the way of interactive history lessons, perfect for people who have a genuine interest in the history that inspires these games. But if you’re less into history and more about stabbin’ stuff, then the next big expansion, which is due to come out today, will be more your speed.

The cinematic launch trailer for The Curse of the Pharaohs has finally been released:

Assassin’s Creed has never been shy to really delve into more fantastical or mythical elements of history, but I can’t recall anything being as overt as this latest DLC, where a magical artifact has caused mummies, giant scorpions, and other mythological creatures to threaten the whole of the Nile valley – and it’s up to you to quell the spirits of the angry pharaohs by going into their respective afterlives (which will apparently consist of unique, new open worlds) and facing them down.

Granted, I’ve never really played Assassin’s Creed, so maybe this is business as usual for the Assassin order. Who can say?

In any case, to face down these new supernatural threats, you’ll need to be stronger, which is why the level cap has been raised to 55 and you’ll get access to seven new unlockable abilities, new gear and outfits, and of course, weapons – special weapons, in fact, themed around classic Egyptian mythology.

Looks like fun, more or less, although a fairly dramatic departure from the whole reason Assassin’s Creed became the mega-hit it is today, as it seems to be almost entirely lacking any sort of sneaky-stabby business that assassins are known for. Still, diversity is never a bad thing, and we need more games based on Egyptian myth so… I ain’t gonna complain.
