| Pretty good list. I would say Goldeneye deserves it over one of those games, but so hard to choose which one to remove. Goldeneye was the first console FPS that was worth anything IMO. I really loved playing Quake II, and I believe it is hands down better than Quake 1. I'd have to say that Quake 3, or more so the engine, has played a bigger role in FPS. My Top 5 FPS Games that "Defined an Era": 1. Doom 2. Goldeneye 3. Unreal Tournament 4. Quake 3 5. Counter Strike |

| Counter-Strike made my friends (and family) interested in FPS games. I think my friends are playing right now! It's our ever favorite past time, and Half-Life too. That game made my family united ( Me and my cousins). | |

| Funny, I think Counterstrike and it's various iteration are about as fun as doing laundry, but that may be because when I finally tried my hand at it 3 years ago, I didn't last very long. Way too short of a life span and "fun" factor for me. On the other hand the original Quake, I think, deserves more recognition than any of you above may realize. Having bought the game when it was still new, in '97, and genuinely being scared while playing the single player mode in the dark, alone, I have to say that besides Doom 3, no other game had me that bothered in terms of suspense or sheer "scary but must keep playing" factor. The single player may not have had any coherent story, but the # of maps and levels meant I could play that for a very long time (4 "episodes" or stages with 7-8 maps each, 32 or so total), and play it in CO-OP mode with other players. The gloomy, dark hallways, dynamic lighting, the gothic atmosphere, interesting selection of standard-but-not-quite weapons, great sound-fx and CD soundtrack, overall ambiance, zombies, medieval and future-tech monsters all in one game, despite blazing away at 320x240 resolution for most of the early years myself, I was in love with the game, so to speak. Add to that funtastic multiplayer (LAN for me, 56k was just sad with 300+ ping most of the time) and the ability to mod the game with a little understanding of basic programing, almost any way you want. I spent 7 years modding and experimenting with my own ideas in Quake, maybe due to one of its best qualities in my opinion, user based modding and utilities (WorldCraft map maker, QME 3D, an assortment of 'Quake C' compilers for the programing bit). Later releases of WinQuake and OpenGL Quake, allowed the Windows users to run it with better newer systems and take advantage of slightly improved 3D accelerated graphics (smoother textures, lighting). Also the release of "Quakeworld" fixed most of the original Quake multiplayer issues associated with handling lag and all that good stuff in those days, making it that much more popular and playable online. Quake 2 may have improved upon Quake 1's shortcomings, but the concepts were already there. Fun singleplayer & multiplayer, and even better modding, and all that good stuff were there in massive quantities for Quake. Hell, they even started the whole fan-based "PlanetQuake" website dedicated to Quake 1 (and then later others in the series) which acted as a popular hub for all sorts of Quake related news, activity, game files, mods, patches, etc. which then other games franchises followed (PlanetUnreal, etc.). QuakeCon wouldn't be around if Quake 1 wasn't as popular... But maybe I'm biased? Hah. I love all 3 Quakes, and Quake 4 was alright. But those 3 original games are on my all time favorite list. |
