Say you walk into a lan and you get yourself setup. You then look around with some confusion and see that not many people there are playing your game or games of choice. This is something that has happened to everyone who frequents lan events from time to time so we decided that we'd put together a list of multiplayer lan games that are good lan games to bring along with you.

First, if you'd like to get a quick start then check out Quakelive which is a free lan game that will be going public on February 24. Their site is www.quakelive.com. If you're into first person shooter games then you'll probably enjoy Quakelive. This is a really fun fps and good solid game to get the festivities rolling.

An important thing to remember is that before you decide to go to any lan event, especially one in which you don't know anyone or only have one friend accompanying you, make sure you bring at least two or three games with you. You can settle for one or two but if the lan party is more than 6 hours in length then you'll find yourself bored after awhile. Also, most lan parties revolve around lan pc games rather than console gaming but some typically have one or two people bringing their console system with them and usually it's to either play Halo or Rockband from our experience.

Below is a list of good lan games to consider picking up;

Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty World at War
Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Tournament 3
Counter Strike Source
Quake 3 & 4
Halo 1 PC
Team Fortress 2 (Haven't seen this played a lot but it can be fun for some.)

Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars
Command and Conquer Red Alert 3
Commend and Conquer Generals Zero Hour
Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
Company of Heroes
Starcraft (Not played as much anymore but there's a chance you'll find someone with it if the lan event is large enough.)
Warcraft 3 (Same as Starcraft in terms of being played.)

---------------------------------------------------------

The lan games list above doesn't consider all games since typically FPS and RTS games are the most commonly played at lans while most other games revolve around either single player or 1v1 combat but sometimes there are exceptions in the case of games like Rockband in which a group can play. This can be fun for awhile but we don't always go to lans to specifically play Rockband, if we did, we could all bring our girl friends with us, haha, wait, girl friends? ;-)

Last, be sure to go into any lan party with an open mind about most games for not everyone will want to play what you want, when you want. It's usually best to talk to the coordinator of the event and ask him if there's a schedule and ask if you can make a request for your preferred game to be put into the schedule. Usually they'll comply, especially if it's a smaller lan gathering. So if you follow these tips well, you should have a good time at most any lan party you attend!
