Command and Conquer Reboot Possible
2-24-11 Update: Breaking News - Victory Games announced as new EA strategy game studio to be in charge of the ENTIRE Command & Conquer lineup with new Command and Conquer details coming later this year. Is it a reboot? Still unsure, but here's a snippet of a great interview taken from the new cnc web site;

Is a Command & Conquer reboot on the horizon? It seems that way after seeing EA re launch and then subsequently took down its new and improved Command & Conquer website. It had an announcement of a new community manager and a whole new studio developing a new C&C game.
Voodoo Extreme report the site has reverted back to its pre-New Game status, which indicates there was a goof up in its launch, oops, someone fired already? lol... We don't have many details to go on just yet, but the new studio is based in 3 locations (LA, Texas, Shanghai), is called Victory Games and will head up EA's entire strategy portfolio (somewhat hobbled by the closure of EA LA last year).
Victory Games new studio's boss Jon Van Caneghem said in an interview with his own site that:
Thankfully, AAA for once doesn't mean a console only version of the game! He continues:
It's starting to sound as if the game will be something that will be persistently online, the WoW of RTS. That is a complete guess more so based on past conversations of many EA devs and their yearnings to go that direction.
There's also this line, hidden in the About page:
While this could still be a reference to the failed Command & Conquer 4, we can at least hope they don't venture too far from the core of what made C&C games great. Base building, resource gathering and massive tank battles!

| Hmm as much as I look forward to more "conventional military" RTS with tanks and all that good stuff, I really want a game that I can play with buddies in a LAN and with AI opponents for some added fun. Too many newer games have followed the bad trend of not allowing CPU/AI opponents in multiplayer battles. And it's not mentioned here but I am sure it's in the works, I HATE HATE HATE HATE logging in online and staying connected to the internutz to play a game on a LAN or single player because of DRM or whatever greedy little scheme they have to apparently stop piracy. I paid bloody good money for my collection of pc games, let me play without jacking with the internet please. Ok done. Also, my main rant about this based off what I've read above is I do not care so much for "persistant game world" type RTS, not from the C&C brand anyway. I mean sure it's a new trendy thing that everyone and their uncle's into now perhaps, but there's games already out there and I don't know if they are that popular to begin with (sure Shattered Galaxy is almost 10 years old, and now free with limited options to play and dated gfx... but but....). In any case while it may be "fun" to play on a persistent world, I prefer the standard game mode of online multiplayer for my RTS. Leave WoW and MMPORPGs to provide the persistent battle thing and I'll be happy. |
