RIP Steve Jobs... although I never "personally" owned a product of yours, I value your contribution to the tech world.

I saw a great little picture/blog posted contrasting Steve Jobs contribution vs. another very significant person in the computer/electronics industry. And frankly this fawning over Steve Jobs is kind of annoying..

Frankly, the only thing Jobs contributed was the Mac, and proprietary overpriced i-gizmos (iMac, iPad, iPod, iPhone) cleverly marketed to suck in consumers into believing they're getting something elite. These gizmos are quite specialized and limited in their abilities in comparison to their competition while perhaps being good at what they're designed to do, look good and appear user friendly, but that's it, all for a hefty price tag. I suppose all the Apple fans and consumers think that's OK. Sure his company is successful and employees lots of folks. A great thing for any one to do.

When he died, everyone is massing over and remembering him and praising his contributions.... Okay. He was a marketing genius perhaps and good at playing the game, and many believe probably caught his break because of Steve Wozniac - the actual brains behind the tech for the longest time. But everyone knows Apple and Steve Jobs.

Does any one know who Dennis Ritchie is, WITHOUT hitting Google search? I didn't either. He's only the creator of a little programming language you all may have heard of, C and most likely revolutionized the IT industry for it. You know, the same C, or C based C#, C++, and a multitude of other computer languages that programmers use to make your video games, several operating systems, make the INTERNET work, and just about every type of software out there in any computer and smartphone today - oh, and the Mac and about every popular Apple product today....and he co-created the UNIX operating system used in many IT industry computing needs.

Yeah, no one in the mainstream has ever heard of this guy. Yet he died 1 week after Jobs, on October 12th 2011, and I cannot remember ONE mention of him by anyone on my Facebook network, TV news media, etc. This guy single handedly MADE computers and electronics what they are today thanks to his talent, but no one remembered him.

Just thought it was interesting how much frothing fans and hype can help bolster one's perceived "contribution" to society, while being completely ignorant or forgetting about someone less "popular" who actually made all this possible in the first place.
