So I'll admit I'm the last person to associate myself with alcohol or the alcoholic beverage industry. But I can't help it notice that the character behind "The Most Interesting Man In The World" TV and radio commercials has some qualities we as men (and perhaps women too) may want to look into. I will also mention that I do not consider myself, unlike some self-help or other new age gurus, to be perfect and above such improvements from time to time.

The apparent appeal of The Most Interesting Man's character at first glance, is his interesting lifestyle, his adventures, and accomplishments, as portrayed by the quirky but cool ad campaign. But, what catches my attention most is the catchphrase at the end of the commercials, "I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis." At first I thought to myself, 'self, if they're trying to sell beer, why would they have him he say something which makes it seem like he doesn't really like beer, which would seem to go against their goal." It didn't seem to "jive" with the point of the commercials, which is to get the viewer to be interested in their brand and buy their beer because the viewer absolutely must have it and no other. Well it's been a few years since I first saw the commercials, and I suppose just recently something clicked in my head and I had a EUREKA! moment about the whole weird Interesting Man character.

I'm not a certified psychologist, but am interested in finding out and theorizing about the way our minds work. A few things I've learned over the last few years about people and myself, seemed to have helped me comprehend this. If he's the most interesting man in the world, then chances are he possesses at least a few key qualities that differentiate him from the masses of other not so interesting, or not as interesting men. Right? Right.

One of those qualities being, he does not seek approval from others. If one reflects upon the quote above, it is easier to see what I mean. He doesn't ALWAYS drink beer. Listen to the way he says it with a casual attitude, it speaks volumes in my opinion. It may mean, he does not feel it necessary to fit in with society or to conform to others image of what a true man should do. He prefers Dos Equis, if he ever has the taste for some beer. That whole statement oozes of self confidence, with a good dose of non-compliance, and even a hint of arrogance and possibly a little narcissism. The qualities to take away from this breakdown is that one should not always set their goals, their motives, their self-worth, based on what someone else, or society in general perceives as "the standard." It means you hold yourself to your own ever changing, ever improving high standard as a person.

He believes he is so unique that he doesn't need to drink beer when among friends, or perhaps at social gatherings. That statement and attitude also suggests that he probably does not approve of overindulging and gulping down gallons of beer at one time. That itself is not bad advice, as it is not uncommon to see many bar patrons getting "smashed" with one too many drinks. Perhaps he doesn't even think much of beer, or give it importance. He may in fact rely on other methods to be interesting, to have fun, such as BEING full of various life experiences, adventures, having interesting ideas, conversations, achievements to discuss, jokes to tell. All this would require one to make an effort (lots of effort in some cases) to have an "Interesting" personality of course.

Along with that whole not-caring-what-others-think attitude, are of course, the laundry list of quotes one may recall being narrated by the voice over. Most of them are of outlandish claims and achievements of fantastical proportions belonging to The Most Interesting Man In The World. But despite their humor and seemingly unrealistic claims, there is something of value to be garnered. For example "His business card says 'I'LL CALL YOU.' This suggests, yet again, that he does not sit around waiting for the person to call him. He makes time and calls them if he wants to, and they will be the ones interested in speaking with him. What does this mean? To me, it yet again reinforces the fact that one should not rely on others for their own happiness, or self worth. If one is an interesting, self-confident person, who has enough self-respect and integrity, OTHERS will seek him/her out, and that person will then filter through the masses and invite them into his/her world as he/she pleases. Obviously, it doesn't mean one should stay in a corner and expect people to somehow be attracted toward him. He needs to approach them as appropriate, but not cling to them or try hard to gain their acceptance.

These points combine together in my mind as reinforcing the qualities one can look to seek and possess, to achieve self sufficiency and reliance, good self-esteem and confidence, and be THAT interesting person who everyone wants to get to know, and be around.

Because, you are "The Most Interesting Man/Woman In The World."

Wow, I can't believe I wrote that 3 years ago. And to think that now I'm a mere shell of what I was back then, intellectually (which wasn't that great to begin with).

Life can be grrreat.

Hah, "intellectually" as in, lately I'm incapable of writing something as clearly as what I set out to do with the OP, and this was more of a fun exercise in writing more than some life changing advice. Though perhaps there is some intellectual ideas being discussed -- perhaps on a more vain level or something like that relative to everyday problems. However, if you were in my place a few years ago, this sort of obvious stuff was not so obvious to me, and I'm sure many more people.

Of course, one has to remember that your perception of intellectual discourse starts with 'hay' and ends with 'horse.'
