I recently downloaded the Windows 7 beta and installed it as an upgrade to vista [i dual booted xp/vista] just to see if there was much improvement. Having been foolish enough to install a copy of vista that was given to me ;) on a separate drive, i gave it a go, and in my eyes it was rubbish. It was too taxing on ones system, wasn't compatible with many of my older games [generally having to find a fix on the internet for many of my games], a lot of silly little additions...that were pointless and crashed too often. Whilst it was a rather pretty OS, it sucked, even the updates were rubbish and didn't fix a thing. When i heard about Windows 7 beta from a friend, i was a bit cautious before i dived my head into it, but from a few other friends, i heard many good things. I gave it a go and I'm happy with it, to a point were i might do away with Windows XP when Windows 7 comes out. It doesn't chew your system to shreds, looks good plus lots of nice little bits and pieces/changes to the whole system. If you have an extra hard drive, give it a go, you can get it from Microsoft for free.

Give it a go.

Good to see you back Silverridge. From what I hear, Vista was like Millennium and Windows 7 is the new XP. I'd give it a bit since it's still early in the Beta and I'm surprised it's even a Beta right now. I sincerely doubt there are any games supported on it. If there are, I'd be surprised. Btw, moving this thread to the PC Modding forum.

Just installed and tested the following
  • Fallout 3 [worked fine]
  • Gears Of War [worked fine]
  • Warhammer: Battle March [worked fine]
  • System Shock 2 [same as windows xp, same fix works fine]
  • Warhammer: Shadow Of The Horned Rat [same as windows xp, same fix works fine]
If it handles games as well as xp, then all will be well, and from my test, so far so good :D

p.s. good to be back

I will admit I don't have a lot of knowledge about it, just that it was new and seemed to be a lot better than Vista.

Windows 7 is infinitely better than Windows Vista. While Windows XP I think has been the longest running or rather, usable PC operating system that I can remember, even to this day, but I eventually upgraded to Win7 Ultimate x64 in late 2009 when I upgraded my system to a quad core. Runs like a dream and I've not had to worry about reinstalls every 3-9 months like I did with Win XP.. due to whatever reasons that may be including spam/spyware, that's the biggest relief!

lol, yeah, maybe the thread title should be changed to just "Windows 7". My work laptop has win7 and I like it but I don't like the constant updates nagging me, lol.

Oh, yah I like some of the update features, like it will find new drivers for the chipset or other various peripherals, (including video drivers!) but yes it does get nagging.... You can "hide" the updates you don't want, or just turn off the windows update feature just like before. :)

Thread revival #2.

It's been almost 4.5 years since I've been using Windows 7, and I have to say, I'm generally very satisfied. There have been no annoying re-installs necessary like I mentioned with WinXP in my older post, except for system upgrades as far as I recall. I've even had it pull through (so far) from random freezes that required hard restarts (and I almost always skipped the 'check window/repair windows startup blah blah' screen.. badd I know).

The only downside I can see is that the damn thing creeps up in harddrive space after the periodic updates. I had partitioned 50 gigs for Win7 and thought that would be more than enough (and I always install programs/games as much as I can on another partition to save space on that 50 gig). After the initial install which had over 30 gigs free, I'm down to 10-11 gigs of free space on the Win7 partition. Some of it MAY just be crap I accidentally installed in the default C:\Programs etc. but even then I think I'm going to need to repart soon or just get a separate HDD for Windows 7 and start from scratch. Even emptying out the temp folders and install cabs doesn't seem to free up much.

Windows 7 is rock solid IMO.

I'm so nervous about Windows 8 and the interface that I think I might skip it.

Well according to Andy and Blaine they've gotten used to it, or was it just Blaine? Hah. Yeah definitely gonna go the same route I did with WinXP and stay with Win7 for as long as I can possibly do so, until the usual 'the 2nd iteration that works,' Windows9 or Whine or Touch These Square Tiles and Boxes is released haha.
