They were so overpriced back then, compared to what they did and how hot they ran, I think Nvidia finally may have caught up to ATI, but their prices are or at least up until recently were horrible for what you got. For $250 I think it was, I bought an Nvidia 260GT, and it did no better than my $189 9800 GT.
Worse yet, not having good experience with ATI's one card I bought 11 years ago, I paid $179 for an ATI 5770 this time around, based on my brother's advice and it actually performed way better, and ran much cooler.
