New Twitch Competitor?

To the surprise of many, Steam launched their own live streaming service recently, dubbed Steam.tv. Though we now know this was entirely an accident.

Steam.tv had a quiet launch yesterday, leaving viewers to parse what they could from the site. It appears to function much like Steam's built-in video sharing service, allowing users to browse and watch livestreamers playing a video game while participating in an online chat. During the launch, the only viewable broadcast was the DOTA 2 International.

Not long after the launch, the site was taken back down. Valve has since issued a statement saying that this was intended to be a discreet test launch and not a formal release of the service.

Will this be a new competitor in the growing market for live streaming, or will it fall to the wayside in favor of the current streaming giants? Only time will tell.
