Nintendo has been doing a rather excellent job keeping the NX under wraps. Better than it ever did with the Wii U or the Wii, which they was always pretty outgoing with from the moment they announced they existed. Why it feels the need to be so secretive, well… that’s anyone’s guess. All we really know is that it’s a dedicated games console (nothing to do with the lifetime wellness thing they’re apparently working on) and it’s supposed to appeal more to the ‘hardcore’ crowd many feel the Wii and Wii U abandoned.

Today, that hasn’t changed. We still don’t know a damn thing about the console or its hardware. But today, we’ve learned what the first games for the NX system will be!

You ready for this?

It’s…

…Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI.

Not terribly exciting. Firstly, that series only really has weight in Japan: In the Western world, Dragon Quest is just kind of a JRPG that tends to be above average quality-wise, but has never taken off with the popularity it enjoys in the East. Secondly, those two games already exist: Dragon Quest X is out on the Wii U, the 3DS, and the PC, while Dragon Quest XI is going to come out soon on the PlayStation 4 and 3DS. Which means that when they come out for the NX, they’ll just be ports… like that awful Arkham City Wii U port and that even worse Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Wii U port. That doesn’t guarantee the games will be bad, it’s just… not a good sign.

Anyway. That’s pretty much it. We’re still going to be in the dark about the NX until 2016, at the latest, so if Nintendo is just trying to get our hopes down so the reveal will be even more astonishing then… mission accomplished, I guess?
