It’s not terribly surprising that a game as hyped as and with as much prestige as The Last of Us 2, would sell well. It’s as sure a thing as the sun rising each morning. But it might be surprising to hear that not only did the game sell well, it actually set a franchise record for sales in the first three days it was released.

…Okay, that’s not terribly impressive, considering there’s only two games in the franchise, but it also managed to beat out the new God of War and Spider-Man in three-day sales as well, so that, at least, should be eye-catching.

Because whereas God of War sold 3.1 million copies in its first three days, and Spider-Man hit 3.3 million copies in the same time frame, The Last of Us 2 has managed to hit 4 million copies. Which is a pretty significant lead over the newly-dethroned runner-up.

Creative director and probably bad person Neil Druckmann had this to say:

"We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We've also been so inspired by your creativity--whether it's your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you've recorded using Ellie's guitar."

Needless faff aside, this is a pretty impressive record, and certainly a nice feather in the PS4’s cap before the PS5’s release later this year, and the inevitable Last of Us 2 port.
