Telltale's Game of Thrones to be Released This Year

This winter. Not making the joke.

I’m not a fan of Game of Thrones

Not because I dislike it, quite the opposite.  I’m sure I would adore it if I gave it a chance, so for the sake of my free time and productivity I’ve knowingly kept it out of my life.  That said, the Internets been making it hard to keep it that way, and things have only gotten worse for me ever since Telltale announced they were making a Game of Thrones game in 2013.

Telltale Games has a pretty good (and well deserved) reputation for making quality adventure games as of late.  As an dedicated fan of their Walking Dead series (even though I’ve never watched a single episode of the TV show) I want, desperately, to play their Game of Thrones game for myself and indulge in their storytelling chops, but I can’t imagine I can get away with playing that particular game without first having at least a little knowledge on the source material.

Well, as it turns out, even if I was to pick up the first book now, I probably wouldn’t have time to cover it all: because according to Telltale PR representative Laura Persuco, the game is slated to come out late this year.  She Tweeted:

"No specific release date announced yet, but I can confirm that the season IS still premiering later this year.”

This may come as a bit of a surprise to Telltale and Game of Thrones fans alike: outside a few brief teasers, the game has effectively been developed in complete silence.  To hear that despite this, the game is so close to launch, it’s a bit baffling… especially considering most companies will advertise the heck out of their game MONTHS before launch.   It certainly runs counter to industry wisdom.

But it is what it is.  Hope it’s getting some fans pumped, at least!
