Telltale Games first got really noticed in the gaming world when it’s chose-your-own-adventure masterpiece based on the Walking Dead series was discovered to be really, really good. Ever since then, it seems Telltale Games is putting out more games based on more franchises than you can shake a stick at: Fable (the comic, not the game), Borderlands, A Game of Thrones…

...alight, so you could probably shake a stick at that, but still: it seems Telltale has gotten more ambitious with it’s recent success, and ‘turning your franchise into a Telltale Adventure Game’ seems to be a popular trend as of late. In that respect, we should find it less surprising that Mojang and Telltale Games are teaming up to make Minecraft: Story Mode in the first place, and more surprised that it took this long to happen.

Minecraft: Story Mode will be just like every other Telltale title: it will be episodic, it will involve choice, dialogue, and it will ape the style and feel of the game it’s based on, namely Minecraft. If you want more details than that, then I’m afraid you’re out of luck: Telltale has a well-deserved reputation for being tight-lipped about It’s games until just before release, so the most I can share with you is a little tidbit from Mojang:

"We're not intending on creating an 'official' story for Steve, or explaning the world of Minecraft in detail. It will be a cool game."

Despite its name, apparently the game won’t be heavy on story at all, but will still have one.  Additionally, it's going to be a separate game, not an add-on for traditional Minecraft.  I’m… not sure how that works, but I’m certainly as interested as everyone else to figure it out. Right now the game is slated to be released sometime next year for Consoles, PC’s and Macs, as well as some mobile devices.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first major reveal out of Mojang following Microsoft’s purchase of them. I have to admit, for all the fears around that purchase, so far I can say I like where things are going.
