Super Smash Brothers for 3DS Sells Over a Million in Two Days

And that's just in Japan

So if you’re a fan of Nintendo, fighting games, or you just like watching grown men freak out over the shadow in a trailer, then you’re probably aware that the next Super Smash Brothers game has already been released for the 3DS in Japan.  The internet has been abuzz with the recent release, with people showing off the hidden fighters, new final smashes, and crying when they realize they were wrong about the shadow in the trailer.  People are excited, is the point, and considering Super Smash Brothers is one of Nintendo’s most reliable franchises for both quality and sales, it should come to no surprise that even though the game has only been released in Japan so far (the American 3DS release is slated for October 3rd) it’s already one of the best-selling 3DS games of all time: with over a million copies sold in the first two days of release.

That’s better than the sales numbers for Pokemon X and Y, Monster Hunter 4 (which is huge in Japan) and Youkai Watch 2 (which is even HUGER in Japan).

It’s a good number to reach, but since this is just a quarter of the sales they can come to expect, it’s even more promising for the big N: they also have the Western 3DS launch to look forward too, and the Wii U launch for both Japan and the West sometime this winter. It’s hard to say which version will sell most—the console version is more attractive to a lot of gamers but there are more 3DS’s in the world than Wii U’s—and it’ll be a interesting little arms race to see if people are willing to endure small screens and lower graphics to play their smash on the go.  I doubt the 3DS version will be what we see in tournaments, however.

Still, maybe this marks the end of Nintendo’s troubles?  Maybe?
