Konami Denies Rumor of IP Buyout, Silent Hills Revival

Such a shame.

If you’re a Konami fan, then clearly you’ve been living under a rock and you desperately need to go back there. But in the more likely situation where you’re a fan of the games Konami owns the rights to, then you’re probably having a rough time of it. The last real “game” Konami put out was Contra: Rogue Corps, which was really bad, and before that it was Metal Gear Survive, which was also pretty bad. People have been thirsty for Konami to either get their act together or finally give up on video games and just invest 100% in the pachinko business they seem to love so much, so recent rumors – that Konami was either revisiting the Silent Hills project that originally spawned P.T., or that they were actually selling some of their IP, like Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill to Sony – got people rather hyped.

After all – what could be better than putting their beloved property in the hands of a studio with actual talent and passion? Or reviving the last good game that Konami put its name on?

Unfortunately, those rumors finally did get Konami’s attention, and they felt obligated to actually address them when talking to Rely on Horror:

“We’re aware of all the rumors and reports but can confirm that they are not true. I know it’s not the answer your fans may want to hear... It’s not to say we are completely closing the door on [Silent Hill], just not in the way it is being reported.”

Konami has been hard to put a pin on in recent years, surviving thanks to its sports games and pachinko machines and occasionally putting out a game, but they seem to have stalled pretty significantly on anything else. They’re a bit like Valve, if instead of Steam, they had gambling.

Either way, Silent Hills isn’t coming to us from Konami. Sad, but true.
