Is Heroes of the Storm a Good Game?

Depends how you look at it.

Heroes of the Storm is a MOBA that was developed by Blizzard. For those of you readers that play Overwatch, I'm sure you've logged some hours into HotS. Basically, Overwatch players can get free loot boxes, skins, icons, and sprays by playing matches of Heroes of the Storm with a friend. This system, while it does generate traffic to Heroes of the Storm, is completely flawed and desperate. I understand that Overwatch is incredibly popular, so why not use Overwatch to bring attention to less popular games?

I wouldn't be complaining about this if you were allowed to play matches of Heroes of the Storm by yourself. The only way to get any rewards is to play with a friend. I know you can just go in, find a random person, add them and play, but just the concept annoys me. It's not enough that they're drawing one person in to play the game, they need to all bring at least one friend in order to get rewarded. Blizzard knows that people are only playing the game because they want stuff for Overwatch. They aren't playing because they genuinely enjoy it. I mean sure, the game has players that will log hours consistently, but there are more players that just hop on for Overwatch bonuses.

The first time around it was all for Genji. Now they're doing a big release for D.Va by giving away a free skin, spray, icon, and if you play all 20 games, you get 10 free loot boxes on both Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch. A lot of people have been playing five or ten games, as the first five give you the Oni Genji skin, and playing ten games gets you the Officer D.Va skin.

All of this being said, I don't think that Heroes of the Storm is a bad game. I actually bought it before it was released to the public for free because I was pretty excited to play it. It certainly didn't turn out to be a huge success, but I had a lot of faith in the game. I still think that it's a fun game, but I could never picture it being played competitively. Games like League of Legends and DOTA are much more hardcore in my eyes. Personally, Heroes of the Storm reminds me of Adventure Time Battle Party. If you haven't heard of that game, you're not missing out on much.

Between capturing all of these objectives and getting experience by just standing around minions when they die, the game almost feels incomplete. I think Blizzard was trying to make a very casual MOBA with Heroes of the Storm, and with that taken into consideration, the game is not bad. However, when it's compared to serious, competitive MOBAs like League or DOTA, it doesn't even appear as a blip on the radar. Not to mention the fact that they kind of shot themselves in the foot by giving out Overwatch rewards. The game is completely loaded with players that are either bots or people that intentionally throw games to get them to end quickly.

I don't see a chance of Heroes of the Storm becoming a top-tier MOBA game. Even with all of the changes they're making and the new characters they're adding, it just won't ever get a seat in the Hall of Fame.
