Geralt Comes to Kill Monsters in an Upcoming Monster Hunter: World Update

He's becoming the Stan Lee of video game cameos.

With The Witcher 3 being the final game in the Witcher video game series (or at least, the last one to star Geralt) it seems everyone’s favorite monster hunter needs a new way to make ends meet. Given that he has a very limited set of skills, his options are pretty limited to spin-offs and cameos, or guest-starring in other games. Seems he’s leaning towards the latter, as not only is he a star in the latest SoulCalibur game (so much so he’s got a spot on the cover), but he is also going to be a limited-time playable character in Monster Hunter: World.

Which, I’ll grant you, makes more sense from a thematic standpoint.

Worlds will collide with the next big Monster Hunter: World collaboration – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt! Step into the shoes of Geralt of Rivia and leverage his expert monster hunting skills as you take on a unique quest line in Monster Hunter: World. Free title update coming to #MHWorld in early 2019.

We don’t know a whole lot about this free content update, other than a vague date and that it will take Geralt through a mini-questline as he learns the ins and outs of the monster hunter world. Apparently, the gameplay is going to try to fuse the unique blend of styles seen in both Monster Hunter and The Witcher, although how that works in practice is anyone’s guess.

It’s also worth noting that the PC version will also be getting this content, but only after it launches for console. So all you PC gaming nerds will have to keep yourselves busy with the actual Witcher games while waiting for this to roll out.

In any case, this is looking to be the most ambitious crossover Monster Hunter has employed yet. Typically, we only see some new armor and cosmetics from these events, or in the case of Final Fantasy, a brand-new (and super tough) monster. Adding a new playable character with new gameplay and something of a story? That’s cool in theory. We’ll just have to wait to see if it’s cool in practice.
