Gaymer X Loses Sponsorship, Gains More in Response UPDATED

That's more than just a silver lining.

While all eyes were on Comic-Con over the weekend, there was another convention this month that was also pretty important: Gaymer X, a LGBT convention that looked to address LGBT issues in the gaming world and celebrate gamers of all sexes, genders, and races. It was a smash hit on all counts except one: money.  Running a convention is an expensive venture, and the bill was over $90,000 USD when all was said and done.  A hefty cost, especially since something as controversial as a LGBT-focused convention isn’t exactly going to be a massive draw for most companies who might not want to go on record as having sponsored it. (See: Nintendo)

Well, it’s one thing not to support it—it’s quite another to promise to support it and fail to follow up.  Such was the case with Danganronpa, Disgaea, and Hyperdimension Neptunia developer NIS America, who failed to deliver a $3,000 dollar pledge due to miscommunication within the company.

“I checked to see that we still had spend[ing] (sic) left in our games budget. Unfortunately, during this time our games producer was out and I didn't find out until today that the remainder of the budget had already been allocated." a representative for the company said.

3,000 isn’t much compared to a 90,000 bill, but it’s certainly an amount that can’t be ignored.  Fortunately, gamers can be pretty awesome when they want to be, and that missing 3,000 wasn’t missing for long. Devolver Digital, the creators of Hotline Miami and Titan Souls, promised to make up for the slack and pledged $3,000 towards 2015’s Gaymer X conference.   And after challenging other game developers to follow suit, that donation as matched by Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone) Tinsley PR and Coffee Stain Studios (Goat Simulator).

Not bad, right?  Unfortunately, it might not be enough: the organizers behind Gaymer X declared that this year’s conference would likely be the last—at least, the last at such massive scale—due to costs and organizational woes.  Still, all that extra money can’t hurt, and it’s certainly going to a good cause—even if there is no 2015 Gaymer X convention.

UPDATE: NIS America has officially followed through and delivered the promised $3,000.  In an apology, David Alonzo of NIS America had this to say:

"I'd like to sincerely apologize once again for all the miscommunication on my end, as I should have been more clear about things from the start.  I also want to say that as a part of the LGBTQ community, I will always be supportive of queer rights. I obviously got overzealous in wanting to support you guys, but because of this I failed to follow the proper internal protocol. Fortunately, NISA wholeheartedly endorses the community, and has fulfilled what was promised."
