After over six years of sitting around, space truckers, explorers, and mercenaries alike will be able to stretch their legs for the first time. Introducing Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, a major expansion that will let players leave their ships and move on foot.

Elite Dangerous released in 2016. Developed by Frontier Developments, it was a modernization of the classic space-faring game Elite. In it, players can earn money and gain a reputation across a massive galaxy as either a trader, an explorer, or a fighter. Earn credits, buy better ships, achieve greater tasks.

In the Odyssey expansion, the game will introduce atmospheric landing an the ability to leave your ship and travel by foot. There will be a variety of different landscapes on different planets, where players can discover outposts, settlements, and more.

This is a step further than their last expansion, Horizons, where players were able to fly into the atmosphere of select planets, collecting resources and assisting settlements placed on the surface.

The expansion will also include first-person combat. Players will be able to equip their avatar with gear and weapons and participate in "a multi-layered, deep, tactical environment where Commanders, SRVs and Starships converge." We're not entirely sure what that means, though.

Lastly, the expansion includes a small collection of improvements and quality of life updates. Frontier describes a more immersive and expansive set of contracts and a new social hub system.

Odyssey was actually teased previously, implying that a major expansion was coming near the end of 2020. Now, however, the developers are expecting to release the expansion sometime in 2021. While an official release date is not available, the expansion is already on Steam for wishlisting. Assuming the same formula as their previous expansion, Horizons, we can expect a price of $29.99
