But keyboard re-binding! That's a plus!

Destiny 2’s been in the news a lot as of late, given that Bungie’s next chapter in their latest blockbuster series was shown off quite a bit late last week, but for every answered question, Destiny 2 gameplay clip and appearance of that not-as-clever-as-they-think-he-is robot thing, we have ourselves another question… especially for the PC version of the game, which will mark the first time this series (of, again, just two games) has been accessible to the PC master race.

But as many recent games have shown, getting a PC port of a console game “right” is a lot harder than you might think, and while Bungie certainly has more experience than many with PC ports, they’re still dealing with a property that has far more moving parts than their earlier sci-fi shooter. So, to calm their controller-foregoing players, they spoke with PC Gamer and revealed some of the many quality-of-life options the Destiny 2 PC version will employ to make it as comfortable as possible to play on the computer.

This includes:
  • 4K Resolution Support (3820x2160)
  • Uncapped framerate
  • Full mouse and keyboard support with custom key mapping
  • Text chat
  • Adjustable Field of View
  • Detailed PC settings screen
  • 21:9 monitor support
There’s a lot to like here, but unfortunately, there’s one thing absent from the list that might make or break the experience for some players: the lack of dedicated servers. While console versions of the game appear to have one, for PC, players will have a bit more trouble connecting with each other. Bungie PC lead David Shaw had this to say on the issue:

"We've done a bunch of stuff overall. We've heard that across the board, so we have looked at our tech and tried to figure out ‘okay, where can we optimize, how can we reduce that.’ So there is new tech coming, but I would say that, at the moment, it's not specifically geared toward PC. But again, we have things we are doing to kind of get to the last push, so we're very cognizant of those issues and we're definitely trying to deliver the best experience possible."

Not encouraging, but it might be the best we have: and we can’t all be Ubisoft, right? With any luck, Bungie’s experience will win the day, and we can go back to wondering how/if character transfers will work for PC.
